Emerald
is a form of Beryl and gets its characteristic emerald green
color from traces of chromium (and possibly vanadium) in the crystal
matrix. Emeralds of excellent quality that exceed a carat
frequently are valued above diamonds.
Inclusions
caused by calcite deposits (jardin) are typical in emeralds
and color saturation and hue are a bigger factor in determining
the value of an Emerald.
Colombia
enjoys the reputation of supplying the finest in Emeralds
but excellent quality gemstones are also produced in Brazil
and Zambia. Most Emeralds are oil-treated when they are cut to reduce
the likelihood of fracture.
Some care
must be taken in the setting of Emeralds in jewelry and the
wearing to reduce surface impacts. The majority of our Emeralds
are Colombian, mainly from the renowned Muzo Mine.
Legend
and Lore:
Emeralds have been treasured for thousands of years. The
infatuation with Emeralds dates back to ancient Egypt and Rome.
It is said that Cleopatra was always adorned in Emeralds and that
this was her most treasured jewelry.
Emerald
is the anniversary gemstone for the twentieth year of marriage,
and symbolizes love and success.
